Intent

We aim to help children develop an enjoyment of a variety of music from different cultures, eras and styles, through listening and practical music making experiences. We cover the 7 interrelated dimensions of music: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure.  As a whole class and in small groups, children are encouraged to experiment with sounds using the interrelated dimensions of music. They learn to compose, perform, listen and appraise using their voices and a wide variety of tuned and untuned percussion instruments. Singing assemblies also take place each week. Children’s confidence grows through the ample performance opportunities available, from in-class performance to rehearsed performances to parents and other members of our community.

Implementation

Learning to play a musical Instrument

In Year 2 children at southwood have the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. Mrs Taylor and Mrs Andrews lead a lunchtime recorder club every Tuesday.

Children in all year groups have the chance to join a rock band and can learn to play the electric guitar, keyboard, drums or vocals in a happy, supportive environment with their friends. Rocksteady lessons are on a Friday afternoon.

We also have a school choir, Southwood Songbirds. They regularly perform in our special assemblies through out the year , Farnborough Frost Fayre and enjoy singing Christmas carols around the community. Last year they visited BMW offices and Morrisons.

Bringing Africa to life!

Year 1 and 2 were fully immersed with an African drumming workshop. The children thoroughly enjoyed banging on their drums and playing simple traditional rhythms. Their drumming circles certainly created a team atmosphere and the school was filled with their energetic and loud drumming sounds.

As part of our Going Green topic and a way of educating the children about reusing, reducing and recycling waste, we made our own instruments.
