At Southwood our Year One children have a fun, purposeful and exciting curriculum that is focussed on developing previous knowledge and new skills in a fun and engaging way!
In Year One our curriculum is taught in a rich, broad and balanced way covering all subjects with clear links between areas. In Literacy we focus on key texts as hooks into children’s learning with a strong focus on drama and oral speaking and listening skills. In Maths there is a strong focus on learning number fact skills and applying these key skills to solve problems. We also have a strong emphasis on developing children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural understanding in taught sessions and during circle time activities. This develops their life long skills and teaches them about respecting each other’s values and beliefs.
Our children are taught through whole class and focussed group sessions. Children study a different theme each half term and subjects are woven into the topics to create memorable and purposeful learning experiences.
